If you’re searching for something to make you chuckle, I’ve included a few hilarious trailers for a forthcoming science fiction comedy film from New Zealand called Mega Time Squad to check out. The movie is claimed to be a “study in high-meets-low, combining elements of sci-fi, the crime thriller, and the comedy to make a comedy heist film with a time-traveling twist.” This description is used in conjunction with the movie being compared to The Castle and Looper.
Things take an unexpected and fascinating turn, as you’ll discover when you watch the trailer.
A low-level thief from the New Zealand town of Thames, who “steals an ancient Chinese bracelet time-travel device that helps him pull off a heist and start a new life,” is the protagonist of this narrative. However, there is a possibility that he will not live through the evil effects of meddling with time.
Tim van Dammen is responsible for both the screenplay and the direction of Mega Time Squad, and the cast includes Anton Tennet, Jonny Brugh, Hetty Gaskell-Hahn, Arlo Gibson, Eru Wilton, Milo Cawthorne, and Simon Ward. Although “moderately impolite” seems to be about as bad as it gets, Thames, New Zealand’s nasty streets, become an unexpected location for an action triggered by the supernatural in “Mega Time Squad.”
This dynamic is further heightened following the discovery of a time-travel gadget that makes clones of our not-very-clever hero. Tim van Dammen’s clever criminal comedy portrays both good folks and evil guys as gormless clods, and this dynamic is only heightened after the discovery of the device. The polished weirdness that results from the unusual combination of comedy that is both dry and wide at the same time is delivered extremely beautifully by an ensemble that has been cast very well. Consequently, the film should create an impact at home while generating considerable attention internationally.
The film is a significant departure from the prolific music-video director van Dammen’s last movie, the humorous but rough trailer-park rock musical “Romeo and Juliet: A Love Song,” released in 2013. The film’s aesthetic, which is tongue-in-cheek and splashy, is instantly appealing. John (Anton Tennet), a premier punter in his town of 7,000, is in circumstances that are modest even by the norms of his community since his parents have been dead for a long time, and he does not have an abundance of gray matter.
While “working” as one of the numerous dim-bulb flunkies for the local criminal lord Shelton (Jonny Brugh from “What We Do in the Shadows”), he resides in a garage (from which he is going to be evicted), where he is about to be kicked out. Shelton gives John and his closest friend Gaz (played by Arlo Gibson) the mission of preventing a rival Chinese triad group from delivering money to an antique shop.

This is a poor plan, but things turn for the worst when Gaz declares that he’s sick of being “Shelton’s bitch” and suggests they steal the money for themselves instead. In the middle of the robbery, John gets distracted by a charm bracelet displayed in the store and decides to steal it despite the shopkeeper’s stern warnings. Unfortunately, things go from bad to worse very fast, and John is forced to go on the run from not only his criminal organization but also the one headed by foreign nationals.
However, he also finds a way to escape the many people planning to kill him: This charm functions as a crude time machine, allowing whoever wears it to go back in time a sufficient amount to avert whatever hardship they are now experiencing. Additionally, it makes a copy of its user; so with each usage, there is an additional John clone out there, potentially helping or hindering earlier versions.
This is excellent news, especially when the first John finds he may form his gang (see also: title). The bad news is that none of these “other me’s” are any more intelligent than the first John, which leads to disagreements and backstabbing among the other Johns. Worse, this hocus pocus originates from an old Chinese monster that will take the lives of every single John and probably their immortal souls.
Their only trustworthy ally is revealed to be Shelton’s younger sister Kelly, played by Hetty Gaskell-Hahn. All of the Johns have a thing for Kelly. The magical elements of “Mega Time Squad” are not treated any more seriously than the rest of the show, which is mainly a comedy about criminals making silly mistakes. Briskly paced, purposefully goofy, with witty, slangy banter and comedic situations (especially once we get to the excellent sight joke of a half-dozen Johns wreaking havoc), and a strong sense of self-aware silliness.
The movie maintains its comedy by including just the absurdist elements. Even if inspiration does seem to wane a little bit near the conclusion of the film, van Dammen’s screenplay pulls through with a thrilling ending in which John gives his intolerable and bullying former employer a piece of his mind—successfully holding something as absurd as this requires a great deal of expertise.
Van Dammen does this with exceptionally sharp assistance from Luke Haigh’s quick-reflexed editing and clever compositions by DP Tim Flower, not to mention the music that has a propensity for grandiose and bombastic ’80s-style synthpop, which serves as the ideal sarcastic backdrop to all of the stupid actions shown onscreen.
When it comes to Tennet, the effects that enable numerous Johns to appear in the frame are no less astounding than the actor’s skill to keep them all seeming equally and endearingly dull. The cast is excellent, with Brugh playing an admirably whinging villain. After being kicked out of living in his mother’s garage, petty criminal wannabe John (known as a “Bogan” in the slang of the area), along with his dopey friend Gaz, decide to screw over their boss, Shelton, for some money stolen from a rival Asian gang that is setting up shop across town. This occurs on a beautiful day in John’s sleepy coastal New Zealand town.
During this procedure, John acquires a mystical bracelet that, as he would soon learn (from himself), enables him to travel a few minutes back in time at the push of a button. This occurs via one of those peculiar Chinese antique stores only shown in movies. He then embarks on an adventure to realize the ambition of acquiring some of that “Sweet Chinese Money,” with the possibility of establishing a romantic relationship with Shelton’s sister, who lives in the big city and builds bombs.
